Our home is always welcoming new children’s books. We love to snuggle up and read together, and we do this quite often! So when I was asked to give a review of a new children’s story, I was so ecstatic! And it’s not just any story, but a Christmas story… and even better.. A Christmas story about Christ! The Gift Giver, by Jacob Haslem (Author), Elissa Weaver (Illustrator), Nick Allen (Contributor) was actually a good fit here in our home.

Even though our kids are young, they were still able to understand the story. They pieced it together with things that they understand about their own lives, faith, and beliefs. We all enjoyed the illustrations too, even our little one. They are detailed so beautifully and truly put a piece of magic in to the story.

Because the concept is more on a biblical sense, the conversation of the characters faith journey can continue even as my children grow. It can create a further conversation and encouraged (especially my 4-year-old) to keep asking questions.

Being able to express the true meaning of Christmas with a little one can be a difficult thing to do. They can all grasp the concept of a magically being, Santa, who is able to do such amazing and “impossible things”. However, when it comes to the miracle of Christmas, and the reason we celebrate this amazing baby, it can be such an intense concept. They are often distracted by the “shiny things”. This story helps to bring the two together. What better way to help them understand? It truly is fantastic.

Hi Danielle, I want to thank you for reviewing my book, I love that it inspired conversation in your family. When Nick and I wrote the book and worked out the image layout, we tried to do it in a way that would inspire children to ask questions, and provide lots of opportunity for parents to teach. We also tried to do it all in a somewhat broad sense so that parents could relate their own interpretation of the story. It sounds to me like that’s pretty much what happened in your home, and that gives me such a good feeling. Thank you again, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas!
